In June 2010, Cotecna Destination Inspection Ltd, Nigeria, inaugurated a newly refurbished building at a junior school in Kano in the North of the country in line with its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Cotecna totally renovated a four-classroom block and administration office as well as supplying desks, benches and chairs for the 650 pupils and their 21 teachers. The building was re-roofed, the floors, walls, doors and windows were repaired or replaced and repainted. The electrical and
plumbing systems were completely reviewed and brand new sanitary facilities were installed. Ceiling fans and air-conditioning units were installed in the rooms at the school that is in a region where summer time temperatures can rise to close to 40°C.

The objective of this CSR action
was to upgrade the school infrastructure and facilities to provide the pupils with a conducive atmosphere for learning. The Cotecna group actively practices a Corporate Social Responsibility policy in the areas of safe water, education and health.

Speaking at the commissioning
ceremony on June 17, Managing
Director Cotecna Nigeria, ‘Tayo Rabiu, said “Our resolve to make this donation was based on our principle of making significant contributions and partnering with other stakeholders to enhance sustainable development in the
communities where we operate.
We are particularly delighted about supporting education as it
contributes to the economic growth of Nigeria.”

The event was attended by Dr
David O. Agbaje, Assistant Comptroller General of Nigerian
Customs who represented the Comptroller General ; he commended Cotecna for its commitment to education.

The school was originally founded in 1986 by the Customs Officers Wives Association in a small room in their barracks. The school is now mainly privately run, though Customs continues to take an interest both operationally and financially.
